Christian Family Intervention
I can do everything through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13, NIV
The Problem is Complicated
The impact that addiction can have on the friends and family members of an addicted person is difficult to measure. Denial is often a warning sign of addiction, and the people in an addict’s life may become frustrated when all attempts to persuade them that they have a problem are ignored or denied. But how can you reason with a person whose illness prevents them from following your logic? Even if an addict does have insight into their problem, they may be too scared or ashamed to seek help on their own. As the person’s priorities shift from God and family to the addictive substance – and, in turn, whatever behavior is necessary to acquire that substance – the family and friends of an addict too often find themselves passively watching their loved follow a path of self-destruction. But whether the pain is caused from feelings of helplessness or the addict’s changes in attitude or behavior, addiction is almost inevitably very painful for everyone whose life it touches.
But the Solution is Simple!
A Christ-centered approach to addiction will bring healing to the friends and family of an addict. Although it can be difficult to accept an addict’s refusal of help, which keeps them in the bondage of an addiction, family and friends can find hope and comfort in Christ.
